Evaluative Report of Commerce Department

The Department of Commerce was started in the College in 1972 just after the college was granted in deficit grant system by the Govt. Assam, with two subjects namely Book keeping and Business Method at the +2 level. There after, with the initiatives of the then Principal Shri S.C.Chakraborty and few local people, the B.Com Course was started in the College in 1978.At the initial stage  the classes of the B.Com level were held at night shift and it was brought to the day shift in 1979. The first batch of B.Com final appeared in 1980, where two of them passed with distinction. The B.Com course was brought under the deficit system of Grant-in Aid w.e.f. 01.09.1983 and the full-fledged commerce stream at pre-degree level was opened in 1984. The Major (Honours) course in Accountancy and Management was introduced in the College in 1986 and 1996 respectively. At the initial stage the intake capacity of the department was 40 and now it is raised to more than 1000 students both in H.S. and UG level. The department has a  glorious history in the commerce education system of Assam. since starting the department lots of students got  position and  distinction both in the HS and UG level. 

The department started to take added responsibility when the BBA department was introduced in the College curriculum in the year 2008. Now the  department is offering three  subjects as major, namely Management Department, Accountancy Department and Finance Department. Dr. Phatik Chandra Kalita is now the overall Head of the department.
